Queen Cleiona Aurora Bellos, informally known as Cleo, is the crowned Queen of Mytica.

She was named after Cleiona, the Auranian goddess of fire and air. She is the daughter of King Corvin and Queen Elena, who are both now deceased. She had an older sister, Emilia Bellos, who was to rule the kingdom of Auranos after their father's death. However, the heir to the Auranian throne was moribund and thus Princess Cleo embarked upon a treacherous journey to search for magic seeds that supposedly could save her sister. Cleo is the descendant of the goddess Cleiona, like her namesake.

Cleo is the former princess, then Queen, of Auranos, and is now the Queen of Mytica alongside her husband King Magnus Damora, with whom she’s expecting their first heir, prophesied to be a son who will grow up to be handsome and strong, and to discover a treasure that will benefit the world.

Personality[]

As a Princess of Auranos, Cleo was, initially, considered to be spoiled, ignorant, and naïve. But she, unbeknownst to others, was truly sweet, kind, fiercely spirited, loving, curiously thoughtful, determined and hopeful. Unlike her sister Emilia, who spent time studying, reading, and learning to become Queen of Auranos, Cleo preferred enjoying life, pampering herself, partying, and adventuring to other areas of Mytica. Cleo was a stubborn and rebellious girl when it came to things she did not agree with or believe were ethical. She is described as "feisty" and tended to be brave when it came to dangers or people who threatened her and the people she cared deeply about.

Appearance[]

Cleo was a small girl with long, sun-kissed, wavy blonde hair that fell to her waist. Her skin was fair, her cerulean (blue-green) eyes the "color of a lake under a summer sky" (inherited from her father), and her lips were rose-colored.  She is described as petite and barely reached Magnus Damora's shoulders. She wore bold dresses and ornate jewelry. Her clothes were usually blue, it being the color of Auranos.

Cleo was considered to be among the most beautiful girls in Auranos, even more gorgeous than her older sister, Emilia Bellos. Many boys were enamored by her great beauty throughout the series, as exemplified by Aron Lagaris, Nic Cassian, Theon Ranus, Jonas Agallon and even Prince Magnus Damora. She is also nicknamed as the "Golden Princess", due to her sunshine golden hair which represents the wealth and light of Auranos.

While possessed by the Water Kindred she had the symbol for water (two parallel wavy lines enclosed in a circle) on her palm, and glowing blue lines extending up her arm, eventually reaching her neck. After the Kindred were destroyed, a blue wisp remained on her temple.

Falling Kingdoms[]

Cleo travels with Aron and some friends to Paelsia to get Paelsian wine. She numbly watches as Aron kills Tomas, then she returns to Auranos. She is assigned a personal bodyguard, Theon, who she tries to escape from on multiple occasions. Her sister is dying from a broken heart, so she decides that she will go to Paelsia again to look for magical grape seeds. She believes these seeds can save her sister's life. She successfully escapes Theon and goes to Paelsia with Nic, but she gets kidnapped by Jonas and his rebels. Nic breaks her out with Theon's help, and they head for the docks to head back to Auranos. The group meets Prince Magnus and his guards, and Theon bravely protects Cleo by killing the guards. Theon and Cleo confess their love for each other, but Magnus, being scared of Theon, stabs Theon in the back which effectively kills him. Nic helps Cleo escape, and they return to the City of Gold.

Her father is vaguely angry with her, but he is mostly worried for her and what her actions could mean for the kingdom. Cleo and Emilia bond together talking about their lives and actions.

Limeros' army marches on Auranos, and Emilia dies due to her illness. Cleo tries to save her using the seeds she got from Paelsia, but it's too late. When the palace's walls are breached, Cleo and Nic race to find Nic's sister, Mira. Cleo encounters Magnus, but she again escapes him. She finds her father fatally wounded, and her father gives her a special ring (Eva's ring). Then, her father dies in her arms, and Cleo vows revenge.

While she looks on from afar as King Gaius declares himself King of Auranos, Jonas finds her, and tells her to be ready for a rebellion. Unfortunately, Magnus finds Cleo soon after, and she is captured.

Rebel Spring[]

King Gaius announced that he broke the betrothal between Cleo and Aron and now she is betrothed to Magnus. Cleo and Magnus are horrified by the news. Aron requests a private audience with King Gaius to change his mind. King Gaius calls Magnus and Cleo to see what they think. Cleo lets King Gaius know she supports whatever decision he makes much to Aron's distaste. In anger, Aron reveals that Cleo is not a virgin and she slept with him. She lies and claims that it is not true. King Gaius believes her and orders Aron's tongue to be cut off. Cleo feels guilty and admits that she was lying to save Aron. The King asks for Magnus's opinion and he says to let it go.

While in the library searching for information on her ring, Aron tells Cleo that her family portraits are going to be burned. Cleo with Mira figures out where Nic is. She pleads with Aron to let Nic go and he relents saying she owes him a favor.

She goes back to her room and Jonas is there. He wanted to see whether she was happy with being betrothed to Magnus. Jonas asks her to be a spy for the rebels, but she defers.

Cleo goes dress shopping with the Queen and Nic as her guard. She is kidnapped by Jonas. She meets Jonas's friends and find out the the king is killing anyone who is suspected in her kidnapping. They are ambushed. She and Jonas hide in a nearby cave and helped clean Jonas's wound. They argue on whether he should let go go back to the palace. They end up sharing a kiss and confessing that they don't hate each other. Cleo and Jonas come up with a plan to assassinate the king and Magnus on her wedding day. He lets her go.

Cleo meets Magnus in the palace and finds out that the queen died because a rebel killed her and Mira died for overhearing a conversation between the king and Magnus.

On Cleo's wedding day, during her vows, Jonas and the rebels try to ambush the wedding but fail. Magnus saves the king from a falling pillar. Surrounded by dead bodies, Cleo tries to postpone the wedding but the king demands that they are married and threatens Nic's life. She relents and married Magnus. During the banquet, she receives a gift from Prince Ashur and he prods about the Kindred. She is dragged to the chambers for her wedding night and unwraps the gift from Prince Ashur. It turns out to be a dagger. Magnus enters and takes the dagger from her then leaves.

The next day she leaves on her wedding tour but not before finding out that Aron is the leader on the hunt for Jonas. Magnus requests Nic to keep Cleo company for the rest of the tour. A stone wheel is gifted to Cleo and Magnus as a wedding gift. The stone wheel is old believed to be a link for the Watchers from their realm to this world. Cleo touches the wheel and it becomes wheel and her ring starts to glow. She gets dizzy and Magnus catches her. He takes her to a maze to stall giving his first speech. She learns that the scar on his face was given to him by his father 10 years ago after stealing something. Before giving his speech, a clocked figure throws a dagger at Magnus and Cleo but hits Magnus's arm while he protected Cleo. Magnus gets the upper hand and the figure is restrained. The figure is a boy whose people have been enslaved to work on the road and village destroyed. He claimed that the Watcher spoke to him in his dreams didn't want Magnus killed. The boy is taken to the dungeon. Magnus delivers his speech but the crowd wants to see a kiss between Magnus and Cleo. Magnus kisses Cleo to appease the crowd.

After they returned, she meets Lucia in the library. Her ring starts to glow when Lucia touches her. Lucia brings up Cleo not being a virgin during her wedding night because she was bitter about Magnus. In response, Cleo brings up talk about Lucia being in love with Magnus. In anger, her fire magic set the the walls fo the library on fire before the glass shattered.

Nic finds Cleo in the garden reading a book. Nic wants her to escape before she is harmed but she refuses. She tells Nic that her ring is the same ring that Eva wore so she wouldn't be corrupted from using the crystals. Through the ring, Cleo plans to take her kingdom back. Nic confesses that he loves her and wants her to run away. He leaves Cleo to go to a tavern after being rejected.

The king tells Cleo that she is disposable and has no real power. She leaves and her attendants gossip about Lucia being taught by a witch. She realizes that it was Lucia that caused the glass to shatter in the library. She thinks that Lucia is the sorceress reborn and goes to Lucia's chamber. She hears crying and goes in. She sees Lucia sobbing because she killed her rabbit through water magic. She tells Lucia that she won't tell anyone and she will help her. Cleo becomes closer to Lucia, and seeks her help in taking down King Gaius.

Cleo finds a note in her sketchbook, an invitation to meet Jonas. She meets him at the Temple of Cleiona in secret, and Jonas talks about rescuing the rebels from the palace dungeon, and asks for her to tell him anything she hears about them. Then, he kisses her, and leaves the temple.

Relationships[]

Familial Relationships:[]

Emilia Bellos[]

Even though Cleo and Emilia have barely anything in common, they hold a very close relationship with one another. However, it is rumored that Emilia held hatred for Cleo for their mother's death, for she died during the birth of Cleo (although this is disproved in Crystal Storm). Nevertheless, Emilia still deeply loved and cared about her little sister. When Emilia was dying, Cleo did everything in her power to cure her, and travelled against her fathers' will to Paelsia to find the magic required.

Notable Friendships:[]

Jonas Agallon[]

A handsome and brave but vengeful rebel peasant from Paelsia, Jonas harbored a misled hatred against Cleo for the murder of his brother. While Cleo was in Paelsia trying to find the exiled watcher who could save her ill sister, Jonas kidnapped her to use her against King Corvin and to instigate a war against Auranos. Later in the series, Jonas comes to find her as a valuable friend and asset and the two shared a renewed, more amiable relationship with one another.

Nicolo Cassian[]

Cleo's trusted friend and the brother of Mira Cassian, Nicolo, or Nic, imagined himself in love with Cleo, but she only saw him as a friend. After their relationship became purely platonic, they remained extremely close friends.

When Nic was possessed by Kyan (Fire Kindred), Cleo was distraught at the thought that she had lost her best friend. As an attempt to end his suffering, she tried to kill him but was held back by Ashur.

Romantic Relationships:[]

Magnus Damora[]

Cleo first met Magnus when they were children, and the royal family of Limeros was visiting her father. In Rebel Spring, after Cleo had been taken as prisoner in her own palace, King Gaius decided to unite her and Magnus as husband and wife in a political marriage. Cleo initially abhorred Magnus because he was the one who had killed her first love, Theon. Magnus, too, initially had no feelings of love for her in return. However, the two eventually came to appreciate each other's company, especially after they both found each other on the same side during the Kraeshian occupation. Cleo realizes that she has truly fallen in love with Magnus, despite everything that has happened between them. After defeating the kindreds, they decide to share the throne of Mytica as king and queen. The series ends in the scene of their coronation when Valia gives them a gift and a prophecy for their unborn son.

Theon Ranus[]

Cleo's personal bodyguard and first love interest in the first book. He was a very skilled fighter and had a strong sense of honor and duty to protect and serve the Bellos family. Theon's father, Simon Ranus, was a personal bodyguard to Cleo's father, King Corvin, and as well as a lover of Emilia Bellos. Theon had a twin brother, Taran Ranus, whom he separated with after their mother's death. During his trip with Cleo in Paelsia, he was murdered during an encounter with Prince Magnus and his soldiers. Cleo then mourned his death throughout the rest of the series and it strengthened her original hatred against Magnus. When she started having romantic feelings for Magnus, she felt guilty.
